is there hope for “development”?

In Notes on 25 November, 2011 at 12:45 am

he had to be frank. “we won’t come with money.” most development agencies do, he said, but not the one he works with. speaking to a group of women leaders in damango, he continued, “when you tell us what you want to do, we will think of how we can help to achieve that.”

in the northern region of ghana, there is a saturation of development agencies. he was compelled to repeat, “we don’t give you money. we direct, train and build capacity for you to start on your own.” these are not hand-outs. rather, “we put your destiny in your own hands.”

the women listened. seemingly familiar with development workers, one elder said, “people have come with empty promises.” and yet, they showed a willingness to work with his approach.

one of his sentences spoke out to me: “from the start, we can help you – on one, two. but on three, we want you to be running by yourself.”

i hope, i sincerely hope that this is “development” with a difference.

  1. Skronchules, this sounds like development with a difference, I am so hopeful 🙂
