the bush is burning

In Notes on 6 December, 2011 at 3:39 am

last week i attended a national farmer’s day celebration in chereponi, the northern tip of ghana. one of the ‘big man’ speakers spoke out rather strongly against the practice of bush burning. although he spoke convincingly, his speech was entirely in english. my colleague frutstratedly pointed out that most of the rural ghanaian audience would not understand a word of his eloquent tongue.

along the yendi-yawgu road that would take us back home, the bush was burning. one of the fires caught an electricity pole and burnt it to cinders. when i saw this picture on my colleague’s phone, it haunted me. i know i need to write more about this, so i hope this post is a prelude to a more detailed note on bush burning.
