A VIRTUAL NOTEBOOK

take a leap today

In Signs on 29 February, 2012 at 1:05 am

happy birthday, layla

on this day, more than two decades ago, mama africa gave birth to a beautiful little girl. mama africa knew that she would be a gift to the world.

“how do i let the human beings know that this girl’s existence will change the world?”

she consulted the cosmos. the sun, the stars and the moon told her about a day that only comes to exist every 1 460 days.

they said, “humans created this day to keep their calendar in alignment with the earth as it revolves around the sun. if you want to send the humans a message, you have to speak in their language. if your girl is born on this day, she will be precious by birth.”

there is one in 1 461 chances of being born today. mama africa gave that chance to her little girl. worldwide, she is 1 in 4 million people who were born on 29 february.

mama africa’s girl was named after the main character in a tale about following your heart. she was also named after the first woman to hijack a plane.

what firsts will mama africa’s layla bring? what legacies will the work of her life reveal? for now, only mama africa knows. but in the meantime, we have one beautiful day to celebrate.

take a leap today.

Leave the familiar for a while.
Let your senses and bodies stretch out

Like a welcomed season
Onto the meadow and shores and hills.

Open up to the Roof.
Make a new watermark on your excitement
And love.

Like a blooming night flower,
Bestow your vital fragrance of happiness
And giving
Upon our intimate assembly.

Change rooms in your mind for a day.

All the hemispheres in existence
Lie beside an equator
In your heart.

Greet Yourself
In your thousand other forms
As you mount the hidden tide and travel
Back home.

All the hemispheres in heaven
Are sitting around a fire
Chatting

While stitching themselves together
Into the Great Circle inside of
You.
